The Second Lock and Mountshannon Mill

Mount Shannon Mill was located at the Second Lock of the Grand Canal. It was powered by waters diverted from the canal to a mill race. The mill was built by James Morris in 1801, who attempted to sell two millstones and a swan. In 1864 the proprietors of the corn and flour mill were J.A. & F. Journeaux. By 1905 the mill was owned by the Irish Peat Industry Company which produced Sunlight Firelighters. In January 1906 the site burnt to the ground but was rebuilt and replaced by HGW Paint and Varnish Factory in 1935.
